Cheap and cheerful accommodation in central location, with English-speaking staff and a lively basement bar mainly filled with backpacking tourists. The rooms range from cheap-as-chips shared dormitories to affordable, stylish apartments with roof terrace

Die Fabrik Hostel Berlin
Posted by chimpanzeemeunkey
Recommended! Die Fabrik Hostel, it is right in the heart of the Kreuzberg district (and, to be honest, where real Berliner life continues away from the hellish maw of global tourism!)

Those looking for a hotel-style accommodation with hostel prices, this is the one. Been going there since 1998 and makes part of why Berlin is so special to me! Has nice big rooms and cosy art deco style. So good, even real Germans stay there. Also has very nice and comfortable cafe adjoining it.

At Schlesische Str. 18, Kreuzberg. Nearest U-Bahn Schlesiche Tor

Propeller Island City Lodge

I'd recommend this place because I enjoy unique hotels. The owner of the hotel, an artist, designed/decorated each room differently and some are downright bizarre: the room with the coffins, padded cell, mirror room, Grandma's, Symbol Room. I enjoyed my tranquil Temple room.

The hotel is located in just off of Ku'damm in Charlottenburg.

Arcotel Velvet

Stylish hotel, excellently located in Mitte, within walking distance of many of the key sights; alternatively, seconds from tram, U and S-bahn. Room design is trendy, with huge floor-ceiling windows. Amazing price-quality correlation. Hotel's cocktail lounge has extensive range of drinks. Breakfast not cheap (15EUR per person) but great selection, including delicious crispy bacon.

Hotel Hansablick

Stylish but moderately priced hotel situated in quiet location near the western fringe of the Tiergarten. For Euro 110 per night we had a huge and very comfortable double room with a view of the River Spree. Breakfast (included in price) is superb. The staff are friendly and helpful and there is someone on duty 24 hours a day. The hotel is small enough to feel personal, and full of interesting modern works of art by various local artists. Three minutes walk from S-bahn; 10 mins from Zoo Station.

Ostel Hostel - The DDR Hostel
Posted by rtg1
This DDR styled hostel is fantastic - it's kitsch, basic accommodation. It's affordable on a budget, clean, has friendly English-speaking staff and it doesn't feel like a hostel at all! Double and single rooms come with private bathroom with shower or there's the 'Stasi' apartment for up to five sharing. It's on the fringes of the Friedrichshain area with a 10-15 min walk to Boxhanger Platz/Simon-Dache Strasse area but there's a bus-stop outside the building where a 240 will take you straight there in a few minutes. Ostbahnhof Station is across the road where the Underground will take you direct to Warschauer Strasse Station (or anywhere else for that matter).

Avoid the breakfast (three euros); we were directed to a darts pub (?) and were served up a very strange mix of spam, boiled eggs and UHT milk all in the midst of an OAP coach party briefing. Bizarre.

If you have a taste for currywurst at three in the morning there's a take-away across the road.

Stay in an apartment
Posted by JessicaAldred
While there are plenty of great hotels in Berlin, staying in an apartment proved much better value. We had a huge one-bedroom place in Kreuzberg, where the bathroom alone was about the size of our whole flat in London. And it was £25 a night each. This website has loads of different apartments all over Berlin or varying sizes. A great way to feel like a local while being on holiday.

Künstlerheim Luise

Every room is decorated by a modern artist, so you might find yourself sleeping beneath some multi-coloured Wellington boots or a portrait of a semi-naked model. One of the better art hotels that have now sprung up all over Berlin. Breakfast costs an extra €8.
