August photo of the month
monk Luang Prabang

Our competition is a year old and, as our first winner was a spiritual tableau, it's fitting this month's winner also has a semi-religious theme. Andrew Bayles' shot frames an apprentice monk as he relaxes in his quarters in Luang Prabang, the saffron of his robe resplendent against the dull wood.

From his impassive expression, it's hard to tell if his mind is on matters spiritual but there's something of the fantasy adventure about this photo. Imagine a questing traveller staring despairingly up at the wall and, just when they decide their mission is impossible, the shutters open extravagantly to reveal a magic monk, ready with wisdom and the missing piece of the jigsaw.

Or maybe this monk's just thinking how the road to spiritual enlightenment isn't always the most exciting journey in the world.

Andrew's image will be scanned on to a canvas block by Point 101.
