Fiona Lydon Watson's shot of the The Fernsehturn in Berlin is our January photo of the month winner. Fiona says of her shot: “The Fernsehturn seen through a piece of sculpture in a park on a cold January day. This was part of East Berlin before the wall came down. Has any other capital city transformed so rapidly as Berlin has in such a short time?”

Our judge, Guardian Travel assistant picture editor Karin Andreasson adds: “This is a beautiful picture, it's perfectly balanced and composed. The soft winter light adds a timeless quality that reminds me of a bleak science fiction movie from the 1970s (like Tarkovsky's Solaris). The Fernsehturn, itself once a futuristic symbol, is now a memory of Berlin's past and is seen hemmed into the contemporary sculpture. This picture shows the idea of future as a moment in time as important as past and present.”

With this Fiona wins an enlarged canvas print of her image courtesy of Point 101. This month was another cracker for top-notch entries, so it was a tricky decision picking just one. Find out which other entries were our favourites by having a romp through our January gallery of shortlisted entries.

Want to enter February's competition? This month we are looking for Budget themes photos. Very in line with the times.
