October photo of the month

Fuxian Lake

Our latest winnning shot was taken by Jeffrey Sheldon and shows a disused pagoda and local fisherman at Fuxian Lake near Kunming, Yunnan province in China.

The standard of entries this month was so high that we enlisted the services of Dan Chung to judge the competition and it was this startlingly serene image that enchanted the award-winning Guardian photographer.

Dan said Jeffrey's picture is "perfectly executed, it has a wonderfully simple composition and a great use of perspective. I love the way the lake vanishes off into the distance, it makes it seem very dreamlike."

Jeffrey's image will be scanned on to a canvas block by Point 101.

You can see some more of this month's fantastic entries in our showcase gallery. If you think you can match these high standards and fancy winning next month's prize, read through our guidelines and send photos to been.there.photos@guardian.co.uk
