Awesome, intriguing, descriptive, super, fab, great. When I look at
ucsajes' photos those are some of the words I think of. And then I get more than a little bit jealous.
Because some people just have an eye for photography and with the image below I think Janine captures a scene which is both colourful and cheery but also poignant and perfectly composed. I'm grateful she has shared the story behind it.

Dotty Wotty by Janine Su

I took this photo at the Heidelberg Project in Detroit, Michigan, specifically on the occasion of its 20th anniversary celebration in 2006.
Detroit's decline over the last several decades has been well-documented, and Tyree Guyton's massive outdoor art project along Heidelberg street, where he grew up, as well as the community arts programme that has sprung up alongside the project, have been among the few bright spots (literally) in the city's recent history.
The artist's mother lives in the house shown here, which is fitting because it is perhaps the most iconic single work in the project.
Recent repainting notwithstanding (still in dots, though), the house is also one of the longest-lasting components of the project, much of which has been bulldozed by the City of Detroit over the years.
I spent a lot of time in Detroit when I was younger, and my first visit to the project was in 1994. Dotty-Wotty has been a constant and comforting sight over the years.
With regard to the photo itself, since there is so much going on, I wanted to isolate a small area of the house in the frame so as not to overwhelm the eye.
I'm really grateful that I managed to snap something that has garnered a bit of notice outside Detroit, so thanks very much for to 'Been There' for
contacting me.
