Paris, France:
Cafe Constant Christian Constant's homage to Basque roots – serves classic and affordable French cuisine. The specials are a bargain; the lobster ravioli is worth the splurge. (139, Rue Saint-Dominique. 7th Arr. +33 1 47537334. €30 for 2 courses and wine)

Capileira, Spain: Bar El Tinao It's old school tapas culture up here in The Alpujarras. Tapas come with each drink. When I bit down on the grilled pork skewer served with my cervesca con limon at Bar El Tinao, I had to rest my head on the bar to muffle an embarrassing sound of pleasure. (C. Carril. +34 65 7626736. €1.50 per drink)
3.
Bari, Italy:
Osteria con Cucina Osteria impressed with a regional specialty of risotto, potato and mussels, and a grilled whole octopus. Then the owner told another table that he only did 4-course meals, and NO they couldn't have only salad. Gravy. (Strada Vallisa, 23. €20 without wine)
4.
Berlin, Germany:
Curry 36 The best of Berlin's curry-wurst – sausages with ketchup and chili powder – has got to be Curry 36. The staff suffer no slowpokes, so have your order ready before you reach the front of the long queue. (Mehringdamm 36, Kreuzberg. +49 30 2517368. < €5)

Vilnius, Lithuania:
ZemaiciaWhere to begin with Zemaiciai? How about a “Beer Snack” that includes pig's ears and tongue, and snout sausages? Follow with “The Pitchfork”, which has 6 beef, pork and chicken steaks skewered on a life-size pitchfork. I'm coming back with reinforcements. (Vokieciu Gatve 24. +370 5 2616573. €30 for 2 courses with beer)

St Petersburg, Russia:
StolleThe only chain outfit on this list, and a rare value-for-money find for us in Russia. Stolle serves sweet and savoury St Petersburg pies, a pre World War phenomenon when German academics were a large community here. My favourites: Salmon; and egg and spring onion. (See Stolle's website for locations. 260 rubles for 2 courses)

8.
Aleppo, Syria:
Beit SissiDamascus captured my heart, but Aleppo – the hometown of many top chefs in Damascus – captured my gut. Beit Sissi's obviously kept an ace at home. Their specialty is cherry-sauce kebab, but what I was syria-sly floored by was its hummus with toasted pine nuts and chunks of lamb. (Jedeideh Square. +963 21 212 4362. 1,600 SYP for 5 dishes)

9.
Zanzibar, Tanzania:
Captain Hadji Suleima HassaniCatch of the day is the only offering at Captain Hadji Suleima Hassani's. I should know. I waded out with him an hour before lunch to see what the boats brought in. For us, it was barbecued white snapper and red garoupa, served with coconut rice, and freshly harvested and stir-fried seaweed. (Paje Beach, +255 77 883 1384. 10,000 TZS for lunch with soda)
