Museo Arqueologico

Posted by irishalice 6 February 2007

A museum with fascinating artefacts from every era of Spain's history - starting with prehistory.

Amazing Moorish and Visigoth exhibits. There are reproductions of the famous Altamira cave paintings in a specially constructed grotto outside.

The museum is also right by the Jardines de Descubrimiento with impressive modern fountains and sculptures celebrating Colombus' discovery of the new world. More famously this is where the Giant Flag flies - a Spanish national flag the size of a tennis court.

Just behind Jardines de Descubramiento, to the right.
M. Colon.

Plaza Olavide

A square in north-central Madrid, between Iglesia and Chamberi. Lovely place with lots of cafes with tables outside, playground for the kids, and off the tourist track.

Las Vistillas

On the edge of the Austrias district, the café tables here look out over the Casa de Campo park into the far distance. Order a whole tortilla de patatas for two or more of you.

Cable car

Posted by GilesTremlett 1 August 2005

Use your feet. Madrid isn't that big. Otherwise try the cable car to the Casa de Campo from Calle Pintor Rosales for great views of Madrid (and the M30 ring-road).

Really cool, spacious urban apartments, designed by Madrid's trendiest 'interiorista', with lots of live-in space, beds on upper floors, sofas downstairs, wi-fi and working/dining table in all rooms (plus kitchen etc). And reasonable prices.

Alicia on corner of Plaza Santa Ana is next to lively terrace bar-restaurants, but Laura is on a nice quiet street near 'Descalzas Reales' and Gran Vía

La Castela

Posted by GilesTremlett 1 August 2005

For really excellent food and knock-down prices, try eating standing up at La Castela on Doctor Castelo at the corner with Calle Narvaez. Fast food never tasted this good.

Dantxari Restaurant

Posted by gastroman 7 March 2008

Restaurant serving dishes from the País Vasco
(Basque) region of northern Spain.

Brilliant food, and that's why I am taken here by my hosts in Madrid who seek a change from the usual.
The most popular delicacies are patatas con bacalao, cocochas de merluza y centollo, zortziko de almejas, solomillo dantxari -al vapor, bacalao al pil-pil, con aceite de oliva virgen y pimiento, and tarta fina de manzana.

You could avoid these and try the more innovative dishes. I appreciated the excellent use of seasonal products and dishes such as 'pil pil' and their cod croquetas.
