Peak retreat
Mendoza, in the Central part of Argentina, is the home of the impressive Mount Aconcagua. Aconcagua , at 22,830 feet (6,959 meters), is the highest point in the western and southern hemispheres, towering above the surrounding peaks in the Argentine Andes. The mountain stands on the border with Chile, some 30 km (a day-and-a-half's hike) away. As the highest point in South America, Aconcagua is one of the much sought after "Seven Summits" and a world renowned peak.

Mendoza is a modest sized city with a bustling downtown area around the main square. The restaurants are good and varied and extremely cheap given the rate of the pound to the peso. The locals are very friendly particularly if you speak Spanish. There is a large park to the north of the city. There really is not much to do or see apart from the attractions outside the city which include the vineyards and various sports connected with rivers and mountains. However the buzz of being so far away from home in Argentina is the main attraction. It is a good place to spend a couple of days before moving on to explore more of the country.
