Forget hustle, expect Australia's best
Canberra is a place often overlooked - if not derided - by international and local visitors alike. But if you accept that its size and design means it lacks the 'bustle' of a larger city, there are some real gems to find and enjoy.

Nearly all the national museums and monuments are here. Many are
outstanding, particularly the National Gallery, War Memorial,
National Museum and Parliament House. But there are some lesser
known and equally interesting sights, including the National Botanic
Gardens, Old Parliament House, the Australian Archives and the
National Science Centre. All of these are a great day out, and many
of them are free.

If all that culture wasn't enough, Canberra also offers a wealth of
outdoor activities, from strolling around the edges of Lake Burley
Griffin to mountain biking or walking in the Brindabella ranges which
surround the city.

Canberra also has more than its fair share of excellent cafes, bars
and restaurants and a surprisingly vibrant nightlife. The mistake
most people make is assuming all of this happens in the centre of the
city. It doesn't. Instead you need to head to one of the suburban
areas such as Manuka, Dickson or Braddon, or ask a local where he or
she would recommend.

The other good thing about Canberra is its location. It's a short
trip from Sydney and very close to the Snowy Mountains National Park,
an area of alpine beauty that boasts good skiing in winter and
outstanding walks for the rest of the year.

If it's hustle and bustle you're looking for, then Canberra may not
be your ideal holiday destination. But when you want to enjoy the
best Australia has to offer, then look no further.
