    The Corner Hotel Richmond

Posted by ismith 26 October 2008

This is one of the better old style pubs in inner Melbourne. Many types of beer and good grub.
Its specialities are the chicken parma and a good serve of fish and chips. Some decent pizzas as well as a kids menu. The rooftop bar and beer garden is the place to be on a warm night.
The Corner Hotel is also well known for its entertainment and is open until late...

    Milano's Brighton Beach

Posted by ismith 22 August 2008

A daggy old longstanding hotel (robbed by bushrangers in the 19th century!), Milano's has gone through a renovation and rejuvenation
and today it has decent dining facilities (new bistro) and new function areas (for receptions or parties). The bay and city views from the upstairs function area is amazing.

In addition, Milano's is gaining a reputation as a great place for live music featuring local acts Dining and entertainment deals make this a great night out.

    The Royal Melbourne Show

Posted by ismith 28 September 2007

The 'Show' - where city and country get together! Once a year, the country invades the city at the showgrounds and lets city families see what the country has to offer.

In addition, there are quite a few competitions where our farmers and country folk can show off the best bull, pig, horse or who can cook the best sponge or grow the best pumpkin.

Sheepdog and poultry competitions are favourites. City kids also have a chance to see new lambs or piglets or chooks. There are enough circus rides, face painting areas and handicraft stalls to keep everyone happy.

Adults have flamenco, hip hop, capoeira performers, belly dancers and others to keep them entertained.

And of course, there are fireworks at night. Everyone should go and don't forget to grab a ShowBag.

In Melbourne you will find soapboxes being put to use on Sunday afternoons at the Speakers’ Forum on the forecourt outside the State library.

Over the years, speakers (including Prime Ministers) have gathered on the banks of the Yarra river to discuss politics (brave!). In 1995, the tradition was relocated to the forecourt. If you have something you think needs to be heard, the stage is yours between 2.30pm and 5.30pm every Sunday. The audience gets to heckle and boo for free.

    Melbourne Zoo "roar 'n' snore"

Posted by ismith 19 January 2007

Go to the zoo and see the animals ..and get up close with the animals. After closing time, "Roar 'n' Snore' starts with dinner followed by a nightime guided tour of the zoo. You get to explore the zoo as night falls and see the zoo's nightlife...animals whose activities start at dusk. Supper follows..before you bed down for the night...in your tent in the middle of the zoo.
I might add, nightime at the zoo is NOISY!
Breakfast is served next morning before more walks around the zoo.
This is simply a wonderful activity that has to be experienced.

For adults and families with children 7+

The Museum includes a large collection of fire related items...fascinating.

    The Boxing Day test

Posted by ismith 17 November 2006

    Cricket fan? Barmy Army member?
THE Ashes test match to attend is the one traditionally starting on Boxing Day at the 'G'. The MCG is the Australian home of Test cricket and the Boxing Day Test match has been there for more than 50 years.

However, this is more than just a cricket match, it's a sporting and cultural event Melbourne is proud to showcase to the world. There is something for everyone if cricket isn't your thing such as: Family Day, KidsZone, Merv's Walk to the G, Ladies Day...so go to the G on Boxing Day.

Melbourne, the culture capital of Australia, has a regular international film festival showing 300 films and over 100 shorts over 19 days at 5 or 6 different theatres. The film offerings are amazing - just go.

The world’s biggest theatre screen showing the world’s largest 3D movies. Amazing and mind boggling. I am having trouble describing the sensation of watching an IMAX movie, you have to see it for yourself.

    Astor Theatre

Posted by ismith 15 May 2006

The Astor, built in the 30s, is one of the last original 'art deco' buildings left in Melbourne. And it’s in great condition with amazing interior and exterior decorations and great armchairs to sit in and watch the movies. A grand old arthouse cinema. Go watch a movie there in 70mm grandeur!

    Cnr Chapel St and Dandenong Rd, St Kilda;
    Nearest station is Winsdor, and the theatre is walking distance from there;

    Rockwiz (at the Espy)

Posted by ismith 22 February 2006

Rockwiz is Australian TV's most eclectic music programme ... shot in a pub (the famous Espy) with guest musos from around Australia showcasing their knowledge of the industry. Viewers can join in and guess the 'Million Dollar Riff'.

Watch it or go to a taping – it’s great.

Through the summer months the Royal Botanical Gardens organise moonlight cinema sessions. Each night they show one current or classic film on a big outdoor screen in the centre of the park. Check the website for listings.

My tip is to bring a blanket. Melbourne can get cold at night, even after a hot day. Some fly spray helps too. Bean bags can be hired at the venue.

    Motorcycle Christmas Toy Run

Posted by ismith 7 December 2005

The Melbourne Motorcycle Toy Run has become a Christmas institution in Melbourne. Upwards of 10,000 bikers, their bikes decorated with tinsel and baubles, get together across the suburbs and head into the middle of the city, before heading off to Williamstown. Once there, the bikers hand over toys and food they have collected to various charities.

It's a big event with whole blocks of the city cordoned off and accessible only to those on two wheels. Those joining in get dressed up as Santa or elves.

Toy Run is a great day out for bikers helping the needy at Christmas.
