    Get out of Melbourne

Posted by saladsal 30 January 2006

Not too far out of Melbourne, take a bus north, or hire a car, and go to the Riverina area on the border of Victoria and NSW, you won't be disappointed. Not that far from Melbourne, beautiful bushland, little bush towns, and the Edward and Murray Rivers are fantastic to swim and fish in. The Riverina is the real Australia and anybody in that neck of the woods should really check it out.

Take two to three days to travel the Great Ocean Road - turn off the beaten track and find wild koalas in the trees. Also, head the opposite direction out of Melbourne and drive down the Mornington Peninsula then across to Wilson’s Promontory for some spectacular camping, bush walks and beaches. At the main campsite on Wilson’s Promontory you will have wombats snuffling around your tent at night. It's one of the most beautiful and unknown places in Australia.

    Warburton

Posted by ismith 6 January 2006

Warburton is a small town about an hour’s drive north-east of Melbourne on the Warburton Highway, nestling at the base of the Great Dividing Range and overlooked by Mt Donna Buang.

Originally a honeymooner retreat in the 50s and 60s it was involved with the Sanitarium Health Food company after that. Sanitarium closed their factory and Warburton became to place to go to the craft and antique shops. The number of coffee shops and cafes also increased and today it is a great place for a stroll on a lazy weekend.

During winter, Mt Donna Buang is snowbound and a day trip to the snow is one for all the family.

    Heide Museum of Modern Art

Posted by gabrielleprocter 6 September 2005

Fifteen minutes outside Melbourne is the former home of John and Sunday Reed, now open to the public. From the 1930s onwards their home, once an old dairy farm, was a centre of the Australian modernist movement. The couple were passionate supporters and patrons of the leading Australian artists of the day. Sidney Nolan painted his famous Ned Kelly series in their dining room.

    Yarra Valley vineyards

Posted by gabrielleprocter 6 September 2005

Around 90 minutes from Melbourne is the Yarra Valley, one of Victoria’s loveliest wine and cheese producing regions. There are lots of tours to guide you around the vineyards or you can simply hire a car and travel at your own pace.
