Australia

A surfer crouching in the evening sun
Once upon a time in Hawaii, a man called Duke Kahanamoku grabbed a 10-foot longboard and the sport of surfing hit the big time. Salt water, sun, sand and a blissfully simple existence combine in surfing to make it an addictive way of life. Brighton Beach

Posted by ismith 9 June 2009

Brighton...? Not as in the UK or the island across the ditch (in Unzud), Brighton beach in Melbourne is the real McCoy.

Split in the middle by Middle Brighton Baths (see other Been There tips) and the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Brighton beach runs from Brighton (obviously) to Brighton Beach - there is a place called that, with a pub and train station.

All along the way is a broad strip of bright yellow sand (NO stones here in Oz) with brightly coloured beach bathing boxes. Pics of these are in Melbourne's gallery.

Laze on the beach in the warmer weather or when it gets cooler in winter and the wind whips up the waves, join the surfers or windboarders on the waters of Port Phillip Bay. Watch out for the dolphins or penguins!

    Brighton Beach is bayside Melbourne
    12-15 kms from the CBD

take the bus or a train to ..Brighton Beach (its a real train station 20 mins from the city)

    What to do in Melbourne

Posted by FrancesHoy 14 November 2006

Where to start?  Melbourne is a great town. Go to the Victoria market in the centre of town, or the smaller and groovier South Melbourne Markets at the weekend. Take a surfing lesson in Torquay after a trip along the Great Ocean Road, or a breathtaking dawn hot air balloon ride over the Yarra Valley wineries. Inner city Melbourne has some excellent bars down its lane ways: check out Honky Tonks for great cocktails or the Hi-Fi bar for grungier action. Brunswick Street Fitzroy is a haven for great food and drink and funky clothes.

    Surf Coast Tour

Posted by Breakers 27 September 2006

Learning to surf at Torquay (at the start of The Great Ocean Road) with local surfing instructors was a highlight. Also shopping at the surf brand outlets and checking out Bells Beach.

    Torquay

Posted by ismith 10 November 2005

Torquay...surf capital of Australia with RipCurl and other surf companies headquartered there. Just along the Great Ocean Rd is the cozy quiet 'burb of JanJuc and just up the road a bit further is Bells Beach. Bells is the name of a place known to all surfers. Home of Autralian surfing and holiday mecca.

Torquay, about an hours drive SW of Melbourne, at the start of the Great Ocean road and capital of the Surf Coast.
