Australia
This is one of the best things I did in Sydney, and it is exactly what it sounds like. A group of up to twelve climbers go up one side of the harbour bridge with a guide. There is a quick training session where you can experience the types of ladders, stairs and walkways that make up the bridge and you are also suited up with all the gear.
Then you go out and are attached to the railings on the bridge and climb. It is not too strenuous and the only time I was afraid was when I was on my way down in the dark and a train sped by me as I was on a ladder. Which was an experience in itself. The guides are fantastic and really know their stuff.
You are not allowed to bring a camera with you but there are many photo opportunities and then the pictures can be purchased for an outrageously over-priced $15 each. Loads of merchandise as well of course.
Spend more than a day in this amazing place - stay in the YMCA, hike in beautiful surroundings, go canyoning, then have a pint in pub and listen to the Hilltop Hoods on the jukebox. Bliss.
It was about 1 hour on the train from Central Railway Station on a double decker mountain train to Katoomba.
Get your walking shoes on for a 10km walk, along unspoilt cliffs and bushland, past little sandy coves where you can stop for a dip, and lose yourself in the coastal Aussie bush while looking out over the harbour. Keep your eyes on the ground and water and the sky. It's easy to forget you're in a modern city of 4 million people. Then climb up over an escarpment and see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the distance. Head there for a well-earned drink afterwards!
Instead of walking or driving around Sydney, to get the best vantage points around the harbour hire a 'Tinny', a small aluminium boat with an engine. You don't need a boat licence, and you can fit 7 or 8 people onboard. You can also organise a fishing licence to catch some fresh Sydney seafood.
