Whitsunday Islands

Posted by TravelKing 8 September 2010

The main reason people visit Airlie Beach is as a gateway to the remarkable Whitsunday Islands. The port at Airlie Beach offers every conceivable way to see the islands and allows even novice sailors the chance to sail around. The Whitsunday Islands are characterised by turquoise blue waters, lush islands and sandy beaches. The most popular and scenic beaches in the Whitsundays is Whitehaven beach which offers powdery sand and crystal clear blue waters.

Sailing around the Whitsunday islands for two days and two nights on board a luxury catamaran.
With a maximum of 10 passengers, the small group meant we had the freedom to try all of the activities. These included windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and a clear kayak.
The crew were amazing, providing watersports tuition, fantastic food and interesting information about the region.
We enjoyed a full morning at Whitehaven beach and snorkelled at numerous reefs. On Ice avoids the crowds to get the best experience and the crew cater for all abilities - they even have an air raft for non-swimmers.
Sailing into the sunset, we moored in sheltered bays and marvelled at the stars and milky way.

Whitehaven Beach

Posted by DunmowDave 25 March 2009

Possibly one of the greatest beaches in Australia. One of the only beaches I have been on where you have to wear sunglasses to look down as well as up! The white silica sand stretching along the coast makes for an awesome sight. Of course, unlike some places, you won't be alone but the beach is big enough to find your own quiet spot. There is no shade of any kind so make sure you dress appropriately and take lots of sun block!

The beach can be reached either from nearby Hamilton Island or even from Airlie Beach on the mainland. Both of these places are a little bit too swamped by tourism in my opinion so you should really only go for the Whitehaven experience.

Remember to make sure you take only photos and leave only footprints as this place is truly unspoilt by the modern world.

Whitsunday Magic

Posted by AliD 30 April 2007

This is a 3-day sailing cruise around the Whitsunday Islands on a 135ft schooner. The rooms are all private, en-suite, A/C. Food is really high quality and there is plenty of it. The crew are fantastic. It includes snorkelling, diving (at an extra cost), glass bottom boat. An excellent trip.

1 The esplanade, Airlie Beach or book through any tourist info centre
