A village for all seasons
adamedwardsteather
Maurach is a small ski village in winter and offers outdoor activities in summer. The village lies between the Achensee and the Inn valley. As a holiday centre in the summer it offers walking in the mountains, walking round the lake and to and from the Inn valley.
The village is on a long distance cycle route from Munich and there are cycle paths round two thirds of the lake. Local hotels offer spa type facilities for those with the money. Maurach has a “beach” at the end of the lake complete with children’s play area, tennis courts and a café. There is a wooden pier out into the lake for those brave enough to face the cold lake waters.
For those less active, visitors get a free bus pass to explore the local area, for example a 15 minute ride takes you to Pertisau, scene for the Chalet School series of girls’ adventure stories written by Elinor M Brent Dyer. Holders of this card can then buy a tourist card for unlimited travel on the lake steamers, the cable cars and the very impressive steam rack railway which runs unfenced through the town on its way to the lake.
