Franz and Adam at the Travel Shack were invaluable in organising the best way to see the city. They found us a great hostel, took us on bike ride of the city, a wicked vineyard tour to say the least.
Also great to meet people in their bar, I can't recommend it highly enough!

To explore beautiful but expensive Vienna, book a hotel near the railway station in beautiful Bratislava and commute.
Reasonably cheap and very clean. Easy access from U-Bahn and trams. Vienna Card gets you anywhere of interest - and with discounts.
Good, adequate, breakfast. There is a swimming pool up on the roof - they'll open it up if you ask them. We stayed in a discounted standard double - paid cash for discount.

Directions on website are correct if you come from the Burggasse exit of the Burggasse U-Bahn station. Otherwise from Urban Loritz Platz find Kandlgasse and go along it. Take the 3rd exit on the left (Halbgasse). Look for the car parking sign.
Lovely apartments in an old Biedermeier building. You get a small double bedroom, sitting room, well-equipped kitchen and bathroom, all very nicely designed. Reasonable prices for the location. Location is just behind the Rathaus and near the Hofburgtheater in the rather grand eighth district.
Try not to arrive late: we had to pick up our key from an adjacent cafe after our flight was delayed.
There's a cheap but very good student cafe on the same street called Tunnel.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Vienna Marriott while on a short business trip. Excellent front desk/check-in service, but what really begs a mention are the fantastic beds at this hotel. My colleagues and I all agreed that the beds were by far the most comfortable ones we've experienced at a hotel in a long time. Sleepy soft with heaps of pillows! Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for quality, location and, above all, comfort!

A really useful and comprehensive site about travelling to Austria in general is: www.austria.info
Wombats operate two hostels - one in Munich, and the original in Vienna. The hostels in both cities are models of how hostels should be run, with a friendly atmosphere, spotless rooms, a free laundry and a bar. The free "welcome drink" at said bar is a nice touch too, even if it is just half a pint.

The Belvedere is where you'll find The Kiss. The Secession houses the intriguing Beethoven Frieze and the beautiful portrait of Emilie Floge can be found at the Vienna State Museum (Karlsplatz).
For Jugendstil and Wiener Werkstatte visit the MAK.
I'm looking forward to staying at the Levante Parliament as I stayed there 20 years ago when it was unlovely student accommodation - it's also very near the Cafe Eiles, frequented by politicians and the actor, Klaus Maria Brandauer.
The best Tafel Spitz (boiled beef not stew) can be found at Cafe Schottenring and the cafe at the Kunsthistorischesmuseum does a fantastic buffet on Sundays (you can even wander off between courses).
Finally, in Winter, for cheap, healthy entertainment - feed the red squirrels at Schonbrunn.
Very nice 4 star hotel in an excellent location, not far from train station. It’s in a quiet area, but one block away is a very busy street. I would say it is about 8-10 minute walk to the city centre. It’s a few blocks away from Vienna Opera House and just across from the 'Theater an der Wien', where you can hear the performers warming up and see them in their period costumes getting their make up done. They waved to us out the window - our was room directly opposite. Also less than 5 mins from the Secession Building, near the Naschmarkt.

A quiet family run hotel opposite St Peters church. You may have a room that overlooks the 18th-century dome, modelled on St Peters in Rome. Reasonably priced for such a central location.

This pension is good quality cheap accommodation. While it is really basic for those people on a tight budget, this hotel is perfect. And it’s ideally located just a minute away from the Opera House. I would highly recommend this place.
Walfischgasse 4, A-1010, which is just of the Kartnering. It is also very close to local transport links; www.pension-suzanne.at/english/index_2.htm
Like most European capital cities, Vienna offers a variety of better and lesser known places to visit as a tourist. One of the lesser known indulgences, at least outside Austria, is the Hotel Sacher Cafe, which is located in close proximity to Karlsplatz tube station (U1, U2, U4).
The hotel itself was originally founded in 1876, is still run and owned by the founding Sacher family, and has come to be known as one of the more fashionable places to stay while in Vienna. The family are also the originators of the more widely known Sachertorte chocolate cake (something unique to Austria), which can be enjoyed with a cup of great coffee in the attached cafe. This also provides a rewarding interlude during what can sometimes become a tiring day of architectural ogling.

Comfortable, reasonably priced, friendly and well run hotel in the heart of the 1st district.

Very reasonably priced, very central B&B just off Schwedenplatz. One of four in the Pension Pertschy Group in Vienna. Slightly old-fashioned and with very little luxury but with so much to see and do in Vienna you'd be mad to stay in your room.
