Favourite restaurant of notoriously well-fed and well-drunk Vienna Mayor Michael Häupl as well as his predecessor the late Helmut Zilk. Whenever I'm home, I go to this place at least twice, it's really great, and filled with locals. The food is traditional Viennese/Austrian, the Schnitzel is delicious. In fact I have never been disappointed and have eaten myself up and down the menu. It's also got an excellent wide-ranging selection of (mostly Austrian) wine, with knowledgeable, friendly waiters eager to give you tips. A main dish tends to cost €13-19.
I can't wait to go back!

    The Lion Rampant

Posted by Hazelwood 13 August 2008

A unique British gastropub. Friendly locals of all nationalities, fantastic music and food with a cosy atmosphere. Live music at weekends from September 2008. It won't be long before you find yourself talking to Elaine and Shuki the owners. You might pop in for one but you'll end up staying until closing time (it's that welcoming)!

    Gösser Bier Klinic

Posted by leejjones 2 January 2008

A great Viennese bar nestled off Graben Strasse, near Stephen's Platz. The only thing better than the excellent beer is the friendly, efficient staff who make sure your tankard is never empty.

The Klinic is not too pricey, and pretty decent food to boot makes this a must for any visitors to Vienna.

The Secession houses Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze and various paintings. It is a very beautiful building and the artwork is amazing.

Also in the area is the Naschmarkt, which is on all week, except Sundays, and sells everything form spices to clothes. I visit every time I go to Vienna, which is about 3 times a year. I bring back the best paprika outside Hungary and flower petal tea. It is very cheap and great quality.

    Kolar Beisl

Posted by mseymour 26 October 2005

Bar in Vienna serving filled Fladenbrote (similar to pitta bread). The original one is in the Kleeblattgasse in the first district though there are now three in total. Walk up to the top of the Graben, turn right, walk along and you'll see the Kleeblattgasse which is a narrow little alley. Mixed clientèle, reasonable prices, dark with loud music. Fladen are great though.

    Käsekrainer

Posted by mseymour 26 October 2005

Sausages filled with molten cheese. Best bought from one of the many Würschtlstände (sausage stands) dotted around the city. Ask for a Käsekrainer hotdog and they take a mini baguette, hollow out the centre, fill it with ketchup and mustard and stuff the cheese-filled sausage in. They're probably heart attacks waiting to happen, the dripping ketchup and mustard are guaranteed to make a mess of your shoes / clothes but they taste amazing, especially late at night

Great local restaurant serving typical Viennese cuisine. Tardis-like in its dimensions it somehow sometimes manages to be full of tourists without seeming touristy. Excellent food, massive portions, really friendly staff. Gets busy so booking recommended if there's a few of you.

Riemergasse 10, 1010 Vienna, five mins walk from the Stefansdom down the Schülerstrasse from where the fiakers (horse-drawn carriages) wait, Tel.: 0043 1 512 6357
