Vienna’s Naschmarkt is more than an antique market. It is a mixture of Austrian traditions, antique dealers, fleamarket and food stalls. Located by two beautiful art deco houses built by Viennese Jugendstil architect Otto Wagner it runs every Saturday and it dates back to the 16th Century. Here you will find antique dealers selling everything from old postcards, books, militaria, porcelain, Austrian glassware, gramophones dating back to the 1900s and old dolls to stalls set up by Easter European sellers who come to Vienna for the weekend to sell vintage clothes, bric-a-brac, exotic goods and curios. The market has a very vibrant atmosphere where Austrians and tourists alike soak up the rich diversity of stalls looking for that special find. By the end of the day stallholders lower their prices considerably (sometimes as low as 50 cents of a Euro) and right before closing time sellers even offer some items for free.

Do not miss this if you visit Vienna - just a short and cheap underground ride from the centre and main attractions, Naschmarkt is a great place to explore for fun, or simply to eat very cheaply. Choose from a wide range of specialist food stalls (lots of cheese, olives etc) from around the world. A great multi-cultural experience if you get the chance, and even better if you're on a budget!

The great thing about the Naschmarkt, at least on Saturdays, is the way it progresses from tidy little Austrian huts at one end to a thoroughly oriental flea market at the other end. It’s like walking from one world to another: the best illustration of Metternich's comment that the Balkans begin at Kärtnerstrasse. Mind your handbag, but have fun! If you are staying in a place where you can do your own cooking, this is the place to stock up. And if your feet get tired, you could have a coffee in the sumptuously mirrored and gay-friendly Savoy Cafe.

The Secession houses Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze and various paintings. It is a very beautiful building and the artwork is amazing.

Also in the area is the Naschmarkt, which is on all week, except Sundays, and sells everything form spices to clothes. I visit every time I go to Vienna, which is about 3 times a year. I bring back the best paprika outside Hungary and flower petal tea. It is very cheap and great quality.

Mon-Fri 6am-6.30pm, Sat 6am-5pm,
Food stalls: Mon-Sat 6am-1opm, farm produce market: Sat 6am-5pm
