    The Prater

Posted by Rachelly 10 February 2007

A trip to Vienna is not complete without visiting the Prater and riding on the Riesenrad (ferris wheel). When you are up there in the rustic red carriages you can look down and see all the rides and people, and on a dark night you can almost hear the Harry Lime tune cranking away in the background . . .

    The Vienna Woods

Posted by JanetD 27 March 2006

Take Tram D to Nusstodorf. Walk up across the hill to Kahlenberg through lanes fringed by vineyards and wine gardens, where people go in the autumn to drink the new wine. Once you enter the Vienna Woods, you will see violets, aconites and celandine among the trees if you go in the spring. It was at Kahlenberg that the Polish king John Sobieski said mass before leading his army down to defeat the Turks in 1683. Sit on the terrace of the hotel for coffee and strudel and look at the fantastic view of Vienna, the River Danube and the Danube Canal.

    Riesenrad

Posted by richardrj 20 March 2006

No visit to Vienna is complete without a trip out to the funfair at the Prater, to take a ride on the big wheel immortalised in The Third Man. Great views over the city, and a surprisingly untacky tourist experience.

    Schönbrunn

Spectacular palace and gardens. The journey to the top of the hill is rewarded by a fine cafe. The world's oldest zoo is here too, a great place to take the kids.

Brilliant view over the city from the top of the Kahlenberg in the 19th district.

Take the 38a bus from Grinzing and just stay on the bus till the end of the line.
