Bangladesh
A great place to shop for clothes - much of the clothes for sale in the western world are made in Bangladesh, and this is one of the places where you can buy them before they hit the high street (and before the high street prices get slapped on).
It's on Gulshan Avenue, between the Gulshan 1 circle and the city centre.
If you are after antiques (genuine, reproduction or curios), this has to be near the top of your list. On the second floor there are quite a few shops ( all visible from the car park). From Moghul pieces to Belgian colonial lamps ... get it all here.
Gulshan-2 (by the roundabout) going towards Gulshan 1.
A pleasant, air-conditioned bookshop with a coffeeshop near Gulshan 2. Smaller than the chain Et Cetera, they hold a wide variety of hard and paperback books in English from India and the UK. They also carry DVDs, kids books and toys. The small cafe seems to be a hit with young locals and foreign visitors.
Very near the Gulshan 2 roundabout. 125, Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan 2, Dhaka 1212. T: 02-9890832
This is a long road in Banani and has ice cream shops, bakeries (Hot Breads), cafes and little boutiques selling children's and adult clothing. The ice cream parlours (Gelato and Movenpick) are air conditioned and with European standard modern interiors. Interesting flavours such as the Ferrero Rocher flavour in Gelato.
Road No 11, Banani. From Gulshan-2 roundabout head towards Banani and it falls on the left hand side.
