Head down Avenue Louise to the Chatelaine area and check out the lovely shops and cafes and, of course, the Art Nouveau architecture (including the Horta museum).

On Wednesday afternoons there is a little market on Place Chatelaine. Le Passiflore cafe, next to Trinity church on Rue Bailly, is a great place for hot chocolate and crepes.

The four-star Radisson SAS EU hotel next to the parliament does very cheap weekend rates for high-quality accommodation, but eat breakfast out to save even more money!

Slightly off the beaten track, yet only 15 minutes' walk from the Grand Place, the Hotel Noga has real individuality (unlike the usual chain hotels) with sizeable, comfortable rooms at reasonable prices. There are all kinds of interesting artefacts around the place which suggest to me that the owner or whoever set the place up might have been a seafarer who visited a lot of places. It's in a nice quiet residential area, yet close to the Boulevard Anspach.

One warning, the location map on the website has very strange orientation, which is very confusing when you're trying to find the hotel. But that's a minor problem for a good-value hotel so handy for the city centre.
