Near Ypres is the village of Passchendaele made famous (infamous) by the third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). Passchendaele was obliterated totally in world war one, but today it is renowned for its cheese.
Passendale (the Flemish) cheese is a semi-soft cheese made from cow's milk. With its brown crust, covered with white mould, it resembles a round loaf of bread. The Passendale cheese has distinctive rounded edges and a soft, damp consistency. The flavour is mild and creamy. Try it.
