Arriving at the dust swept town of Uyuni you immediately know that this is no ordinary town. It has an air of being on the edge of the planet, bordering an unknown world, the last stop before embarking on a four day journey to one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, alien landscapes and strange creatures. Located in south western Bolivia and bordering Chile, Salar de Uyuni sits 3650 metres above sea level and is the largest salt flat desert in the world. 40,000 years ago, most of south west Bolivia was a huge high altitude inland sea and over the following 15,000 years the water evaporated leaving 10 billion tonnes and 12,000 square kilometres of salt. Upon departing the town of Uyuni and embarking on the four day jeep tour, give up all expectation of luxury of any form, contact with the outside world and your perceptions of reality.
