There is a fantastic bay, the beach is about 2kms long. Mainly in August and September - but sometimes as early as June and July - southern Right Whales (Balaia Franca) visit the bay with their babies.
We were lucky enough to see two adults and a baby in the bay over the course of two days. They are easy to spot from the beach as they are so close, so no need for a rough ride out to sea to watch them frolickling around.
Santa Caterina, about 2 hours south of Florionapolis by bus.
A really friendly family-run pousada. Rooms have views of the sea. Beberto and Nany the owners speak both Portuguese and English. The breakfast is fantastic, as is their other home-cooked food available for lunch or dinner.
