Forget Rio and don't bother with the resorts in Natal, says LouiseIshani, the coastal village of Pipa with its cast of hippies and frolicking dolphins is where it's at.

Praia do Madeiro

Posted by dialacliche 19 August 2010

The most beautiful beach in the whole area, worth the short bus ride from Pipa town (take a local bus for R$2.50). The surf here is the best of the town's beaches with many surf schools for any beginners wanting to pick it up. There is also a nearby nature sanctuary which is well worth a look. The beach itself has beautiful sand, is resplendent with dolphins and has incredible cliffs jutting out of the ocean as its beautiful backdrop. At low tide the town can be reached with difficulty by climbing around the rocks to Dolphin bay, which is also definitely worth a visit.

Ask a collectivo (local bus) driver for Praia do Madeiro and he'll drop you outside a hotel. Walk through a gate in the wall and there are steps down the cliff to the beach.

Santuario Ecologico

Posted by dialacliche 21 March 2010

There is a beautiful sanctuary about a kilometre out of town where you can see all sorts of wildlife such as monkeys and lizards, with beautiful views over the Baia dos Golfinhos back towards Pipa. Only R$5 for entry and definitely worth it.

It's a half an hour walk if you just follow the main road out of town, or just hop on a collectivo and ask for 'o santuario'!

Praia de Madeiro

This beach is just outside the main central street of Pipa and it is beautiful. The surf is amazing, the people are stunning and there is even a chance of seeing dolphins!

You can hitchhike to get there or jump on one of the minibuses that pass regularly.

Carnival in Pipa

Posted by LouLula 3 March 2007

Carnival Wednesday (after Shrove Tuesday) in Pipa is a hoot!
Usually all the tourists from nearby Recife have gone home and it's party time for the locals. For the last six years the local men have all dressed up in drag and partied up and down the main street from the early afternoon into the night. It is hilarious and really good fun.

It may not have the glamour of Rio or the music and dance of the carnivals in Recife and Salvador but it is solid good fun.
