Teenage Girl Reading at Hay-on-Wye Book Festival
A holiday's ideal for bookworming and, sometimes, reading about your destination really enhances the trip. For those of us who can't afford a holiday or are fresh out of leave, brilliant travel writing can be the next best thing. And what about bookshops? Finding a dusty, secondhand emporium or trendy gallery shop can make your day. We know Been there users are a learned lot so tell us about your favourite travel writing or bookshops, wherever they are. Send a tip about your favourite travel book, or favourite bookshop, to Been there by Monday July 14, and the tip we like best will bag a copy of Time Out's 2008 New York city guide, complete with detailed maps, independent reviews and the inside track on local culture.

    A cheeky travel guide

Some people are going to groan at the name, but bear with it. If you are young at heart and looking for a variety of fun things to do in Rio, you could do worse than pick up the "Rio for Partiers" guide. It's a little bit like this site - crammed full of tips, and just the thing to turn to if you are wondering "what to do next" in Rio.

It's not the "club 18-30"-ish guide that it seems from the title. I'd recommend at least having a look at it in a bookshop - many of the places in it were things which Cariocas recommended to me anyway.

(Also translated as Epitaph of a Small Winner.) Or anything else by Machado de Assis, Brazil’s greatest novelist. He wrote at the end of the 19th century, when Rio was the capital of a newly declared republic. His prose is so witty and insightful it’s an absolute delight to read.

The best bookshop in Rio, albeit quite expensive, although you may pick up a bargain since they have a huge and old stock. They're very strong in the humanities and have a separate literature/travel shop opposite. Note, you won't find this unless you look for it. You have to find a big office block with Marques do Herval written on it on the block of Rio Branco after the Biblioteca Nacional (coming from Cinelandia). Go into this and then down a spiral ramp and turn left into a corridor.
