Brazil
Me and some friends went to this place called Shenanigans some weeks ago. The place was really nice. We had some beers and also, some shots, which was pretty great. Dart game was one of the funniest things we did in there. Also, we met a bunch of cool peeps, some Brazilians and a couple of Germans. Very nice place indeed.
Like Germany, Brazil has really good draft beer, and it's hard to compare one with the other. The other day I went to a bar called Devassa in Jardim Botanico (Botanical Gardens) and this was very good beer. It's good enough to please even the pickiest German bud!

Gotta love this place, really. The finger foods are pretty darn good and they've got sandwiches that'll fill you up until you say uncle; but forget all that for now. Let's focus on the beer. This is by far, without a shadow of doubt, the best beer I've ever had in my life.
I don't know what they put in it but even the foam tastes good! You can choose from four types of brewed beer (India, negra, loira, ruiva, which correspond to the following tastes: Indian, black, blond and red, the last one being my personal favourite). We went over to the Devassa branch in the Leblon neighborhood, nice place too. Just drop everything and head out there pronto.

Brazil's answer to draft beer is what they call chopp, which is what I was enjoying until I went to this place called Devassa. I guess they have several of these pubs all over town. Anyway, the chopp down here overall is great, but I never had anything like Devassa before. They have four different types of brewed beers, and they're all worth checking out.

Don't know how these guys do it, but they brew their beer to absolute perfection!
I saw a bunch of these pubs spread all over town when I was down in Brazil, and they all seemed to have a pretty faithful clientele.
We ended up hitting the Ipanema spot most the time, and two of those times we closed the place down! That good!

This place's food is described as a contemporary combination of Asian, European, and Latin-American influences. It was my favorite restaurant while on my Brazilian vacation and I went there many times. I liked to sit outside.
I remember looking at the menu and thinking that the other daily specials on the other days sound good too. My favorite special was Samosa, tartar, white fish ceviche and tapioca, and salmon sashimi with passion fruit sauce, ginger and ciboulette served with a curry couscous. Their menu has Portuguese on one side and English on the other, which is great for tourists. The lovely, even sexy ambiance is also a highlight of the place.

Rio de Janeiro is very famous for its bar culture. The words 'botequim' or 'boteco' designate small places with freezing beer, lots of people, bad food and very low prices. The genre of place became so strong that a new style of 'boteco' was created, it keeps the popular aura combined with a tiny sophistication. Devassa Bar in Leblon is an exemplar of the hip but cozy boteco, full of young and interesting people, Devassa has its own beer, in different versions: blond, red, black and Indian. I had the blond and found it very special. The menu is another chapter: many yummy finger foods, typical of Brazil. Go feel yourself a real carioca!

Devassa is a typical carioca bar, that has a special thing: the homemade beer. Devassa has its own beer, in different versions: blond, red, black and Indian. I had the blond and found it very special. The menu is another chapter: many yummy finger foods, typical of Brazil. Go feel yourself a real carioca!

Shenanigans is an unique pub, not only because of the locality, Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, but also because of the Irish-Carioca style mix.
You will find everything an authentic pub must offer: nice beers, pool and smoke together with the typical style of Rio, like nice and friendly people, great music playing and most of all, the carioca flair.

Fantastic, cool bar with an outdoor lounge setting overlooking the lake, plenty of sofas, low tables, cushions, trees, thatched roofs and candlelight. Relaxed atmosphere and v friendly staff who even saw us to our taxi at the end of the night!
Facing the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas
After a hard day swimming, drinking caipirinhas and watching the beautiful people, come off the gay area of Ipanema beach and head directly up Farme de Amoeda to the Bofetada.
This is a little historic bar that's great for people watching and enjoying an ice cold beer. No need to dress up. Just turn up in your trunks like the local boys do!

Another nice place to hang out: this one is at Praça Santos Dumont, the intersection of Bartolmeu Mitre (which comes from Leblon), R. Jardim Botanico, and Marques de S. Vicente, which goes uphill into Gavea.
Two nice restaurants, at the corner of Rua dos Oitis: Braseiro, and Hippodromo.
PUC (the Pontifical University) is just up the street, so there will often be lots of students, and sometimes stars from Globo TV, just up the street in Horto.
Our favorite: the onion soup at Hippodromo.
A large open-air space in Humaitá - between Rua Voluntarios and Rua Humaitá (which is the continuation of R. São Clemente). At night hundreds of cariocas are out eating, drinking, and being social at the four restaurants which serve the outdoor tables - Pizza Park, Galeto Mania (specializes in chicken), Espirito do Chopp (a varied menu including an excellent picanha na pedra, as well as crepes), and Manekineko (sushi). With a view of the illuminated statue of Cristo Redentor immediately overhead.
Between Rua Voluntarios and Rua Humaitá - frequent bus service.
Ipanema beach is lined with tents selling food and drink, and renting beach chairs. We like the one run by Jorge, located between Posto 9 & 10, right in front of the Caesar Park hotel. It's called Ordem & Progresso (the motto from the Brazilian flag), and the employees wear shirts in the Brazilian colors of yellow and green. Give your name to Jorge at the tent, and you can run a tab, to be settled when you leave the beach. Until then just wave, and their folks will bring sandwiches, soft drinks, beer, caipirinhas, piña coladas... the latter comes in single (served in a cup) or double (served in a pineapple). Delicious (and huge). The sandwiches are tasty. Best of all, the folks are cheerful, quick, and honest.

This is an eating/drinking place for the young and modern - a casual restaurant catering to the twenty-something set. Good food, inexpensive, relaxed atmosphere, well-chilled beer. Try the Frango à Cubana (Cuban chicken, with palmito and banana).

Once you get up top at Corcovado you will find that there are no cash machines (ATMs), and that none of the eating places accept credit cards. And that there is not a single drinking fountain (so that in slaking your thirst you spend a few more shekels). Remember that this being a tourist destination, prices are steep (or you might say, sky-high). So be sure you are well-supplied with the necessary before ascending.
We went to this bar on a Saturday night and it was full of cariocas playing samba music, people of all ages, everyone was joining in dancing and playing music. Really good atmosphere and worth a visit if in the area.
