Bagan the ancient temple city is situated between Yangon (Rangoon) and Mandalay and is one of the richest archaeological sites in Southeast Asia with thousands of sacred monuments, pagodas , temples and shrines in various stages of restored splendour to decay.Imagine if you will stumbling on thousands of churches in one area, it is quite sureal, especially of an evening as the sun goes down. This is in an area maybe of 30sq kilometre, certainly as far as the eye can see on the banks of the Ayeyarwady - Irrawaddy River or as an imortal song was once titled "on the road to Mandalay".The road of course being the broad river. Bagan was once the Capital of Myanmar for almost two hundred years at about the time William the Conquerer was seting up base in Britain.Bagan can be reached by air, the fastest way and some reasonably priced good hotels in the vicinity as well as other rooms. Road travel is not for the faint hearted and is about 600 klicks from Yangon. There is also a river cruise which is quite luxurious.People are extreemly friendly and honest. If it wasnt for the polotics Bagan would be a world heritage site and one well deserved.
