Time out from the temples

Even without the small matter of the spectacular Angkor Wat five miles away, Siem Reap would be a pleasant place to while away a few days on your Asian overland trip. A charming little French colonial town with run-down villas (most of which have been converted into restaurants and hotels by now) and a shady river, it's a nice place to sit around in the evening with a few beers after having toured the temples.
