Beach retreat
A couple of years ago, the old salts will tell you, there was only one real paved road in the country. That was between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s key port and the home of Angkor beer (as billboards leading into the city will remind you at every opportunity). These days it is commercialising rapidly, but if you’re looking for a bit of downtime on the beach then you’ll find it far quieter and cheaper here than in, say, Thailand or Malaysia.

On a good day, the beaches are world class, and there’s lots of them to seek out with the help of a moto. Alternatively you can get around via the rivers, though be warned that this is Cambodia and you might absolutely literally have to get out of the boat and push.

Also known as Kampong Som, Sihanoukville town is not the most charming
of places, but it is also a decent stepping-off point for exploring the Ream national park and the nightlife is just as you’d expect for the home of Angkor beer. Or is it Anchor beer? Probably both, same-same-but-different, as they say in this part of the world…
