Banff is a beautiful township set on the Bow river in the Canadian Rockies. There are lots of bars, hotels and inns, one of the largest being the Banff Springs hotel, which although situated 2km out of Banff dominates a lot of the skyline. It has 770 rooms and was built in 1888.
There are lots of things to see and do. Banff Park Museum has a free interactive exhibit, the gardens are wonderful to stroll around. A fantastic walk from the town is along the south bank of the Bow river leading past rapids and cascades to the Bow Falls. They are set in a wonderful basin and the scenery towards the mountains is breathtaking.
Passing along the river you will see the Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum, this fort-like structure displays the Plains Indian history, art and culture. Another great walk - whilst a bit strenuous - is up Tunnel Mountain (5,551ft), but you walk along a winding upward path, which has been specially made. The views over the town and surrounding area are fantasic.

You've seen pictures of Banff or the surrounding area in the Rocky Mountains whether you've been aware of it or not. It's the quintessential Canada. Rocky peaks, turquoise moraine lakes, wary moose peering into the lens. This is Canada's playground located in the most stunning scenery the nation has to offer.
For most of its existence Banff was a quaint railway town nestled in Canada's first national park (and the world's third), with a hot springs and a main street.
Now it's a bustling activity centre for skiers, hikers, golfers, rafters, tourists and mountaineers. For outdoorsy souls this is Nirvana. World-class facilities, mind-numbing and awe-inspiring views and breathtaking sporty challenges.
If Calgary is the gateway, this is the inner sanctum of the palace. An hour and a half from Calgary and you're buried in an avalanche of experiences and opportunities that will rob you of your breath. Just mind the bears.
