An intimate live music venue tucked beside the Queen Elizabeth theatre, The Media Club is one of Vancouver's better kept secrets.
The line up is always refreshing, especially in a city that is finally being given the notice it deserves in terms of up and coming bands.
It is a members bar but guests are welcome, there is no pretention as the crowd tends to be music junkies so any attitude is left firmly up the street. The staff are friendly and the bouncers considerate, what more can you ask for?
It is small and loud, so not ideal for a first date but a great venue to come and hang out, listen to some great new bands and have a good time.

A cheap CD store with a good selection. Vancouver was (is) one of the cheapest places to get (legal) CDs that I've been to and this store is the reason. Virgin had to leave town with its unused tail between its legs because it couldn't compete on price. The already mentioned Zulu records is okay for the locals (best selection and service) but expensive, and how hard is that to find in the UK? Also, try to find the free "HUB Magazine" for local computer stuff which is a deal.

The Naam is quite simply veggie heaven. Choose anything from the menu and you will not be disappointed, my own personal favourite is Naam Dragon Bowl. The Naam is open 24 hours and to make a day of it you can take the aquabus from Granville Island, eat and then take in the sunset from Kitsilano beach (a 5-min walk) and then stroll back downtown along the beaches (a 30-min walk).

For the past couple of years the Canadian music scene has been flourishing with the likes of Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene and Vancouver's own Black Mountain enjoying international success.
To keep your finger on the pulse there's only one record shop that matters in Vancouver - Zulu Records. The store is on the increasingly trendy West 4th Avenue and has a great selection of Canadian, American and international music. Take the headphones at any of the many listening posts around the store to check out the staff's selections split up by genre (including a great local talent selection). Alternatively take any record's you'd like to try out up to the counter, sit down on one of the stools and listen. If you're looking for a bargain then there is a great used records section upstairs.
