Several things go into making a good ski resort: snowfall, terrain, efficient lift system and town facilities. Many resorts make a name for themselves doing one of these well, but Whistler scores the highest marks on all counts, justifying its status as the king of North American resorts and securing it the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Whistler likes to do things bigger and better than other resorts. It dwarves all the others on the continent, and although it wasn't the first resort to embrace snowboarding it quickly realised the potential and has been a stalwart supporter ever since.
It has arguably the best snow park on the planet and enough good restaurants, bars and clubs to make you think you’ve landed in British California rather than British Columbia. Even the free festival it holds every April can secure the likes of Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake. As a result, it’s become a place of pilgrimage for winter sports fans.
The fact that it’s only a 90-minute drive from Vancouver airport along the stunning Sea to Sky Highway will ensure it remains one for many years to come.
