Canary Islands
This art gallery is set in a fortress built between 1776 and 1779 to protect against pirate attacks. In 1974 the architect and artist César Manrique restored and converted it into a modern art gallery and restaurant. What is special about this place is that if the art works fail to enthrall then the building, inside and out, has Manrique's wonderful touch applied to absolutely everything and you cannot fail to be affected by his magic.

A green tourism place run by really nice people. They have stone-built cottages and a genuine Yurt (maybe two by now!) All electricty and lighting is self-generated; you can collect free range eggs (for free) from the hen house and eat fresh potatoes you can dig up yourself. It's like a self-sufficient hideaway yet close enough to the village of Arrieta (towards the north of the island) to walk to.
Tila and Michelle, the owners, not only reccommended the best places to eat but took us out one night as well - what great hospitality! You can also surf there if the wind and waves are right and if they're not you'll always be able to surf at Famara, a 15-minute drive across to the west coast. If you want surf lessons, ask for Dennis Smith. The best part is how well you're looked after by Michelle and Tila. Oh - there's a swimming pool and a fabulous lounging/chilling/bbq/area too.

A beautifully restored little fisherman's cottage right on the pier in an idyllic Canarian village. Walk out the back door right on the sea front; the front door brings you to the village, with some great restaurants. This is a spectacular place, quiet and authentic, but still within easy reach of all the essentials. Delightfully refreshing!

A unique oasis of calm and tranquility away from the centers of mass tourism on the island. Runs entirely on wind and solar energy. Loads of extra details to make you feel at home with comfortable, tasteful decoration - the owners have really gone the extra mile. Fresh eggs from the chickens, fruit from the garden, kids play area, trampoline and bikes for guests to use!
There is a shared pool and chill out area which is a perfect place to relax.
The authentic Canarian fishing village of Arrieta and its fantastic beach, La Garita, are only 5-10 minutes walk away.
We count our week there as one of our best family holidays and hope to return! The experience was a real insight and education for us and our children into alternative energy and green eco living!
