Valparaiso is, quite simply, one of South America's most original and spectacular cities. It's a multicolour jumble of spectacularly crazy Victorian and gothic architecture literally clinging to the hills.
Most people stay in Santiago and do a short day trip to Valparaiso. This is a huge mistake. Valpo deserves at least three or four days to explore. Visit Cerros Concepcion and Alegre, the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, admire the wacky buildings, gaze out over the Pacific Ocean. Take a ride on a 100-year-old rickety funicular. Dine at some of Chile's finest and most innovative restaurants and stay in some of the country's best boutique hotels.
Essential restaurants: Le Filou de Montpellier, Allegretto Pizza, Pasta e Vino, Le Bistro and La Columbina- all within a couple of minutes' walking distance of each other on Cerros Concepcion and Alegre.
Hotels: Gran Hotel Gervasoni, Hotel Atkinson (both on Cerro Concepcion)
