How the Chinese half live
Cut straight through Guilin and head for Yangshuo, one of the few places where the average visitor can come face to face with how the average Chinese lives.
It's an unashamed backpacker centre just off the Li river not unlike the hippie trail towns of Thailand - and just as cheap. From Yangshuo you can cycle or trek into landscapes so incredible you'll think you're just imagining them. Steep rockfaces jut vertically from the paddies, looking for all the world like furry green sandcastles on a watery beach.
