Smallish (24 rooms) 3* hotel in Supetar, the main town, ferry and transport hub for the island (and very attractive place in its own right - good beach alternatives to the famous one at Bol and a lot easier to get across to the mainland).

Extremely friendly and mainly young staff who really want to help. Very clean and a much better breakfast buffet than at many tourist hotels. Attractive terrace bar and some on-site entertainment in July and August, but you're only 5 mins walk from the town centre.

Tiny pool (but only 2 mins from a good beach with clear, calm shallow water), a sauna and laundry service. Rooms a little bit small but well furnished and pleasantly decorated, all have balconies. Rooms on north side have good views of terrace, sea and mountains but don't get any sun - perhaps a blessing in the hottest weather.

Air-conditioning unit in rooms and a good, responsive, decent size shower.

It’s a perfect apartment block/hostel.

Boris, the owner, is really friendly and will meet you from the ferry port. He will happily tell you the best beaches, restaurants, etc. He will also sell you wine grown locally by his family. I bought three litres (it worked out at only about 75p a bottle!) and as he will tell you, it doesn’t taste too hot until the second glass, but then it's actually really nice.

The personal touch in these apartments is really welcomed. Boris seemed to be into providing value for money, and a pleasant experience to the traveler, and not making massive profits.

I went in Sept 2007 and he was in the process of refurbishing the entire building to a very high standard. The rooms are large, clean, and most look out to the garden that has limes, pomegranetes, oranges, olives etc. He was also about to put in a terraced BBQ in the garden with seating area among the fruit trees.

The apartment's location is about a 5-10 minute walk from the town, and 15 minutes' walk in the other direction to the Zlatni Rat beach (the one in the brochures).

If he suggests you go to a restaurant called Mendula - GO THERE! It’s really romantic, cheapish, and the custom is for the waiter to offer everyone a free drink after your meal. They also have a help yourself salad bar that is free when you order almost everything on the menu. (Be warned though; it’s a bastard to find so get Boris to draw you a map!)

4 of us hired a car from Trieste (cheap flights and drove through Slovenia, into Croatia and down the coast with 2 tents.  We stopped at a supermarket on the way and bought a cast iron barbeque for £5.  We then toured the coast, stayed on Brac, as well as inland to Plitvice national parks - all stunningly beautiful and rounded off by a barbeque under the stars every night. 

It’s a great way to explore the country - all the campsites are cheap and of a consistently high standard and there is so much to see.  Barbeque fodder is readily available as Croatian restaurants are not really up to Italian standards. 

Highlights: Bol beach, Plitvice lakes, the weather and the Venetian town of Sibenik. 

Lowlights - torrential rain and the temperature diving from 30C to 1C on the last night; getting lost in a minefield.

From its stunning beaches (one of them being the famous Zlatni Rat) to its great, laid-back nightlife, this was our favourite place in Croatia. We camped in the grounds of the monastry, a beautiful building that overlooked the sea on both sides. It was exceptionally cheap (accommodation in Croatia on the cheap is limited if you don't have a tent) and we woke every morning with a dip in the turquoise sea that was a 1 min walk away. Heaven!

Get a ferry from Split to Supetar on the island of Brac. From there, get a bus to the other side of the island where you'll find Bol.
