From its stunning beaches (one of them being the famous Zlatni Rat) to its great, laid-back nightlife, this was our favourite place in Croatia. We camped in the grounds of the monastry, a beautiful building that overlooked the sea on both sides. It was exceptionally cheap (accommodation in Croatia on the cheap is limited if you don't have a tent) and we woke every morning with a dip in the turquoise sea that was a 1 min walk away. Heaven!

Bol on Brac island is famous for its "Zlatni Rat" (Golden Horn beach), which juts out into the sea and changes shape with the tides and currents. On the western side, Paklina FKK is a popular naturist beach, and the main part of Zlatni Rat is a favourite for windsurfers of all levels, with plenty of training schools.

The winds are generally mild in the morning with the stronger maestral winds picking up in the afternoon. If you're a really keen windsurfer, then Brac island has plenty more to offer. If the maestral fails in Bol then take a short drive to Supetar to catch the southern Jugo wind or to Povlja if the northern Bora wind is blowing.

Brac is famous for its Zlatni Rat beach, pictures of which you can see everywhere in Croatian tourist literature.

If you want something less crowded and more peaceful, the village of Sutivan fits the bill. It’s only a few minutes bus ride from Supeter, the ferry terminal.

A glorious distance view of Split - especially at night - can be seen from Sutivan. It has good quality accommodation and quite a few beaches, cafes and restaurants.

I would recommend the Pizzeria Bracera; at the top of the Riva by the jetty - you can’t miss it. Good quality pizza at decent prices. The ‘Nasa More’ pizza I would recommend.

You can take excursions from Sutivan to elsewhere. The boat ‘Mali Jure’, which you can’t miss by the Riva, does fish picnics to Hvar, Trogir and Omis.
