Kamena lodge

Posted by flyingspark 10 May 2008

I stayed here last September and will definitely go back. The owners are British and good for a laugh. The rooms were all spotlessly clean and each had en suite bathrooms. It's more like a hotel but with hostel prices. The pool and patio area is a major bonus, great for lounging around or to cool off after a day exploring. Use this place as a base for exploring the islands and Split, as a stop over, or even as a short break hotel.

House Sandra

Posted by looney 31 March 2008

I quite liked House Sandra in Split. Accommodation was really nice and cheap. Location is in the centre of Split. Very close to the historical core (Diocletian's Palace), sandy beach Bacvice, museums etc.

Hosts were really helpful. They gave me some very useful advice and info.

Sailing round the islands

Posted by sacollins 1 January 2008

Whether you have sailing experience and do this yourself, or have someone sail for you, this is the best way to experience this part of the Dalmatian coast. You can find secluded bays or pull up in towns like Hvar that are bustling playgounds of the rich and famous and their huge gin palaces.

Vidilica is a cafe/bar on the edge of the wooded Marjan peninsula, at the north/west edge of the town centre. It has a large shaded terrace with fantastic views over the whole harbour, Diocletian's palace, the old and new towns, mountains and islands beyond.

Comfy chairs and sofas, good for photos.

From the Riva walk towards the little church near the start of the marina, Close to Marmontova and the red-arched Trg Republike. Take the small road to the right of the church (Sperun) and follow it up - the name changes to Senjska and it becomes steps that go straight to the cafe. Alternative steps lead back down from the other side of the terrace.

Roman ruins at Salona

Posted by chloie 8 October 2007

Extensive excavated ruins of the Roman city of Salona, on the edge of modern day Solin (a suburb of Split, about 5km from the centre). An attractive, well-presented site including ruins of a theatre, baths, amphitheatre, several basilicas, forum and more - it deserves to be better known.

There's a programme of art/music events in parts of the site during the summer but it's fascinating in its own right. It's large - at least a 10 minute walk from the entrance to the amphitheatre at its furthest edge. Allow at least three hours to do without rushing. Cafe/bar and parking on site, also toilets (in the small museum/ticket ofice - past the first ruins inside the site).

A large and pleasant vine-shaded bower near the ticket office offers a water fountain. All for 20 kuhna! (about £2).

On the edge of Solin, north of Split. Take the no. 1 local bus from the stop outside the department store near the Croatian National Theatre in Trg Gaje F Balata, (walk to the end of Marmontova from the edge of the Riva further from the harbour). Buses every 20 mins or so and journey 20-25 mins. It goes to the site entrance on the left of the street, a little after the police station on the right and there's a stop immediately after the entrance.

BASE rooms

Posted by jyp17 1 September 2007

We stayed in this apartment for one night before taking a ferry to the islands. You couldn't ask for a better location (right next to cathedral square), and the apartment was lovely with air conditioning.

Maybe a bit expensive if staying longer, but I thought the price was still reasonable at £20/night per person (high season). The owners were also very nice and helpful, giving local tips on restaurants/bars etc.

Square in front of Split cathedral

Posted by jyp17 1 September 2007

Beautiful square right in the centre of the old palace walls, with cathedral lit up at night. We passed through at about 11pm and there were loads of people sitting on cushions on the stone steps listening to a woman with guitar accompaniment who was singing from a bar, and waiters were coming round to take drink orders - perfect ambiance in magical setting!

Al's Place Hostel

Posted by lazysal 1 February 2007

We stayed here at the end of last summer and really had a great time. A small, friendly, hostel right in the centre of the old town.
The guy who runs the place, Al, is passionate about travel and has been all over the world. He's very helpful with info about Split, history, bars clubs, (even tho he's quite old), the islands or anywhere else he's been.
It was great having a truly international bunch of ppl staying (not just Aussie and Brits). There's a common area and kitchen and Al often gets everyone out for a beer at night so you get to know who you're sleepin with!

He also organises day trips to local sites some not so well known (we had a big day out at the caves).
We got his address from a Guardian article,

Diocletian's Palace

Posted by theresantraff 29 July 2006

This is a Roman palace near the main square in Split (which also has a little cafe in it). There is a tower to climb up where you have fantastic views of the city, as well as being able to go underground and see the rooms that they have excavated. Well worth a look.

Look for the large tower and the main square - they are all within close distance from one another.

Cafe Nabeel

Posted by MEATBEAST 29 July 2006

Tucked away in the middle of Split's old town, Cafe Nabeel is a curious but brilliant little local hangout where tourists also seem welcome. The kitchen rustles up hefty pies, best shared, and you can also fill up on toast. Late at night the cafe morphs into a lively night spot where the genial Nabeel can be seen showing off his 'bungra' dance moves - join in for a discount! Perhaps best of all is the decor - a bizarre mixture of local crafts and pieces of Star Wars Lego. An unmissable local oddity.

Head down Zadarska, off Narodni Trg central square in Split's old town.

Bistro Black Cat

Posted by Jane Cody 25 July 2006

Newly opened, already doing a roaring trade, and in a lively back street between Split Old Town and the ferry port, The Bistro Black Cat has something a bit different to offer. Sit on the shady terrace and enjoy a full English breakfast, filled croissants, enormous gourmet salads, tapas and a range of international cuisine at local prices. Or just drop by for a real cocktail with fresh ingredients during Happy Hour between 5 and 6pm.

You’ll find Bistro Black Cat, on the corner of Petrova and Šegvićeva, by walking east to the end of Split Riva, passing the market on your left, and then over the bridge over the railway lines on to Petrova. You’ll quickly come to Šegvićeva on your right and the welcoming sign of “Bistro Black Cat”. Or phone 021 490 284 for directions if you get lost! Open 8 am to 12 pm.

Get a ferry timetable at Split ferry terminal and find one of the little routes that goes around several of the small islands. The ferries provide the islanders' bus service, and deliver the post and supplies. If you pick a good route you'll sail into half a dozen tiny blue-water harbours of outlying islands, and all for just a few pounds. Most tickets are valid all day, so you can step off for lunch on an island before continuing. The ferries usually do a circuit, so you'll be back in Split by nightfall. If you are backpacking, you can see almost the entire coastline this way.

Get a timetable at the Split ferry terminal on the waterfront. Most staff speak English and will know the best routes to take.

Traditional Klapa Music

Posted by Jane Cody 31 July 2006

Almost every village and town along the Croatian Coastline has a summer festival of some sort, in July or August or both. Omis, half an hour's drive from Split is one of the heartlands of traditional Klapa music and has a festival devoted exclusively to it every summer. It’s multi part harmony singing, normally male only and without accompaniment, and the sweet stirring tones of the harmonies belie the physique of the singers.

Cetina river

Posted by Jane Cody 25 July 2006

If you’re in the middle of a heat wave and the beaches are too hot, head for the banks of the Cetina river, near Omiš (around 16 miles from Spilt) and take a plunge in icy cool fresh water.

Along the River Cetina are two restaurants which can be reached by ferry from Omiš (for about 35 kunas pp). Radmanove Mlinice is about 4 miles upstream and Restoran Kaštil Slanica, a mile further.
