Cuba

There's not much for kids to do as Cuba is so poor. Beaches are wonderful and a day trip to Veradero is strongly recommended.

If you are in a hotel, make sure it has a pool, and if you are in a Casa, visit the Hotel Nacional's pool.

We went all the way to the huge Parque Lenin on the advice of the guide books - only to find it a deserted wasteland! So beware out-of-date guides.

Our kids loved taking rides in Coco Taxis (little 3-wheel bikes). They also enjoyed the dolphin show, although we probably wouldn't have gone if we'd known the conditions the dolphins are kept in.

Other than that we did the usual tourist things of walking around, markets etc. Not our kids idea of a great time, but we made sure we always did something for them after one of these.

    Central Australia

We had a trip to an area of old sugar production, now a bit down on its heels - in the town of Central Australia. Our children enjoyed the chance of a short trip on an old steam train and a chew of sugar cane by the side of the track, but my highlight was a tour around the offices in town where Fidel directed operations during the Bay of Pigs invasion. The rusting engine of a shot down plane lies nearby.

Central Australia is about 40 miles from Varadero.
