I'm not a big clubber but this place has to be seen to be believed. It's located in a rundown old tenement in the suburbs of Prague. When you arrive you're confronted with an entrance that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie - all shiny metal and whirling cogs. Inside some mad inventor has been at work, creating the most imaginitive interior I've ever seen using old junk. Moving mechanics, old seats from public transport and strange light shows are the order of the day. It's a visual spectacle and a half. My favourite bit is the lights made out of old lemon squeezers.

In summer you can buy beer from a little kiosk in the courtyard and sup it before your film. In winter there's a decent bar and you are allowed to take drinks into the auditorium with you. The cinema's piece de resistance is the fact that the chairs in the auditorium boast drinks holders designed to allow you to line up a beer, a glass of water and a shot side-by-side. Shows arthouse and mainstream films with a decent sprinkling of English language films. Towards the end of 2009 price of entry hovered around the 100kc mark.

Public transport in Prague is cheap and Plentiful. What's more is that it goes on throughout the night. Night trams have numbers in the 50s. One thing worth knowing is that all night trams go through Lazarska/Karlovo Namesti (Charles Square). So, if you know that tram 56 goes past your hotel you can jump on any night tram and change here to your required tram.

Boutique bed and breakfast in Prague.
If any European city goes out of its way to make the British feel welcome, in our experience, it has to be Prague. And the Golden Wheel, despite being sleek, stylish and thoroughly modern, has an extremely welcoming atmosphere. All members of the hotel staff were helpful and friendly, with nothing being too much trouble.
The conversion of a building with a history going back 500 years has been carried out tastefully, providing unique bedrooms – ours was more like a suite – very different to the standard chain hotel rooms.
The small coffee shop on the ground floor was a real bonus – we stayed in winter and the hot chocolate was a warming treat on returning the hotel.
The location is ideal for exploring Prague – the Golden Wheel is situated in the Lesser Quarter, squeezed between the cobbled Nerudova Street and the castle walls. It’s also only a short walk to Charles Bridge and then across to the Old Town.

Guests are invited to help themselves to whatever they want for breakfast in the well-stocked dining room, which opens out onto a lush garden with patio. Hana, the welcoming owner, had lots of helpful suggestions about how to make the most of my time in and around Prague. And pets are welcome to stay free of charge. I wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else.

Only five minutes from the Charles Street Bridge, but well hidden from the tourist bustle. It has it all – great rooms with lots of local character, authentic and friendly Prague landlord and family, great tips for further sights and dining out, good breakfast. It doesn’t have TV or doorways sympathetic to 6ft plus teenagers – provided great material for a piece of A Level travel writing coursework though.

Three died and the remaining four shot themselves. Holes from the bullets can still be seen in the crypt wall.
