25 minutes by train west of Copenhagen lies this former Danish capital, a poshly provincial town that stills enjoys a certain status due to its splendid cathedral - or Domkirke. The cathedral is the burial place of centuries of Danish kings and a stunning experience.

The two other primary reasons to visit Roskilde are the second largest music festival in Europe - Roskilde Festival and the Viking Ship Museum on the fjord.

If you have the time on your Copenhagen visit then pop on the regional train and make a good half day of it. It's easy to visit the cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum in the course of a morning.
