    Aigues-Mortes

Posted by gledders 1 August 2012

One of the most magical moments of my life was wandering unexpectedly into the medieval citadel of Aigues Mortes during the Bastille Day celebrations. The fully walled town, or rather fortress, dates back to the days of the crusades, and parts even further back. With its 6m thick walls and huge rampart towers, it is magnificent enough, however on Bastille weekend, the town is brought to life with a festival of arts, dance, period jesters and craftsmen, fire eaters, historic reinactments and incredible fireworks. The central square a bustle of bars, restaurants and scenes of general hi jinx. Aigues Mortes translates to 'dead waters' in English, this place is anything but.
    "Our eyes set upon Aigues-Mortes . . .
a jewel carefully set in a case of stone."
    Alexandre Dumas
