Avignon, home to the famous bridge, the monolithic Palais des Papes, and the renowned arts and theatre festival in July (bringing with it hordes of chic Parisians, much to the disdain of the locals). Deep down in the heart of the south of France (nearby airports include Montpelier and Nimes), it's a sleepy, historic walled city that oozes atmosphere, as well as some terrific restaurants, streetside cafes and little upmarket boutiques to browse. Good base to explore the region including the beautiful Luberon, the Pont du Gard and Aix-en-Provence.
