PONT DU GARD (Roman aquaduct/bridge) to the west of Avignon is a must see. Saturday AM market at Uzes near Pont du Gard is totally charming and shouldn't be missed.
Take the earliest train that you can and pack a bottle of champagne, sandwiches and cakes for the journey. Drink the champagne after the Tunnel and before Paris and then sleep for an hour before you hit the Rhone Valley.
Remember you arrive at Avignon Central, not the TGV station so don’t try to hire a car from the wrong place. The Grand Hotel by the station is fine and the walk through the city gates and up to the Palace is easy and interesting. The café on Rue Saint Michel at the corner of Rue Paul Manivet opens early on Sundays and has the best coffee. Enjoy!
Do pay a visit to the hidden gem that is the 15th Century Eglise St Pierre in Avignon. The church regularly plays host to operas, and the exterior of the church is exquisite.
Hotel de Blauvac - a wonderful 17th century building in a great location at a reasonable price.
You must try the athmospheric and much loved La Banasterie Guesthouse.
It is located slap bang in the centre of the maze like citadel, but on a quiet side street and with excellent restaurants within a one-minute walk.
Jean-Michel and Francoise make the ancient house terribly atmospheric with fairy lights and by lighting the stairs and halls by candlelight at night.
If you would like a home from home, with an authentic french atmosphere, I couldn’t recommend this place more highly!
The campsite on the southern end of the Isle de la Basthelasse has great views across the river to the old city. Worth an evening stroll even if you aren't camping there.
Visit Avignon during the festival in mid July (6-27 in 2007) for brilliant entertainment in theatres and the street.
When visiting Avignon be sure to hire a car and explore the Vacluse, the excellent markets of L'isle sur La sorgue, and the pretty village of Bonnieux. The place to eat for a wonderful meal, in a building having that special ambiance you only find in small french restaurans is the Restaurant De La Gare Bonnieux, just off the RN 100.
The Vacluse
Take a trip to the Alpilles region from Avignon.
A beautiful walled city with great food and entertainment by street performers at the centre, a place of romance and mystery.

One of the best views of Avignon is from Villeneuve les Avignon, across the Rhone. It is a lovely, quiet spot with a hotel, a fantastic tower and a well-preserved monastery (or charterhouse).
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Avignon, a bus ride away and a great base from which to explore the area.
Avignon is a beautiful. Not to be missed, though, is a journey to the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard and also the amphitheatre in Nimes. When we visited, a bull fight was being staged and people were streaming in to watch the slaughter; the matadors could easily have been gladiators.
