PONT DU GARD (Roman aquaduct/bridge) to the west of Avignon is a must see. Saturday AM market at Uzes near Pont du Gard is totally charming and shouldn't be missed.

Very few people know JS Mill is buried in Avignon in a cemetery just outside the old town.

Just 45 minutes outside Avignon is the mountain village Lacoste which was home to the Marquis de Sade. Most beautiful views, history and a cedar forest for an afternoon stroll.

Do pay a visit to the hidden gem that is the 15th Century Eglise St Pierre in Avignon. The church regularly plays host to operas, and the exterior of the church is exquisite.

Villeneuve lez Avignon really should be visited by anyone intending to spend more than a day in Avignon. Some 10 minutes' drive to the other side of the Rhone is this superbly preserved late medieval village with great views across to the Palais des Papes.

Apart from the Chartreuse, fort, abbey gardens and village square, there's a great restaurant in a hotel next to the church. Very good food in menus costing around 70€.The sommelier is happy to recommend wines at anything from 20€ up.

A must for every visitor is the Palais des Papes - truly spectacular. But also check out the great restaurants and wine bars in the square, the quality is generally very high - a cheap favourite is La Grande Brasserie.

What a find on the drive from Les Baux de Provence to Tarascon. An ancient city with a triumphal arch and cenotaph. The cenotaph is fantastic - so different from the other Roman relics in the area. You can see these two relics any time but the excavations are not open on a Monday.

On the opposite bank of the Rhone, this perfect little village is stuffed with amazing Medieval buildings.

For just over €6 you can get an "Avignon Passion" pass ticket which gives you entry to a monastery, a fortified tower (with the best views of Avignon and the Pont Saint-Benezet, the latter being the correct name for "Sur la pont...") a castle, an abbey garden and three other ancient gems.

The village square has several good bar/restaurants serving reasonably priced local dishes (about €8).

From Avignon cross the Rhone on the bridge signed "Ile Piot", turn right on the far bank and follow signs for Villeneuve a few hundred metres along.Map: tinyurl.com/ys3mhj
