France
I'd recommend Hotel de Blauvac - a wonderful 17th-century building, in a great location, at a reasonable price.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Avignon, a great base from which to explore the area. Avignon is a beautiful. Not to be missed, though, is a journey to the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard and the amphitheatre in Nimes. When we visited a bull fight was being staged and people where streaming into the watch the slaughter, the matadors could easily have been gladiators.
Rue Mère Térésa
A short drive or train journey south from Avignon is Arles. A beautiful town with an enticing mixture of Roman ruins, a Turkish bath house and restaurant, and an authentic small town French charm. Stay at the Hotel du Forum, a beautifully maintained turn of the century hotel with original furniture and timber floors, massive, high ceiling rooms and unintrusive but welcoming staff.

At the La Mirande hotel, in the Cardinalice room adorned by a Brussels tapestry, you will experience culinary art beneath a Renaissance ceiling. The food is absolutely amazing. Chocolate mousse and teas are complimentary. Menus from €35.
