The signature Palm D’Or of the film festival is a reference to the legend of the monk St Honoratus, as according to traditional folklore the monk was praying on the adjoining snake-infested island of Lerins, when God heard his
prayer and instructed him to climb a palm tree while he flooded the land to rid the island of snakes.
