Thanks to John Brunton for his article on budget bistrots. I was so glad to see La Boulangerie on the little, not easy to find street as the number two in the area no one ever mentions, the great 20th arrondissement.

I do love La Boulangerie myself for its exciting food and wonderful atmosphere at remarkable prices. For as long as the bliss lasts - I fear it may get well-known.

Easiest to get to by bus 96 heading towards Porte des Lilas, get off at Julien Lecroix, walk downwards on that same side of the street and to your left is the little dwindling Rue des Panoyaux

Lovely bistro with exposed brickwork and candlelit tables. The waitress went through the menus in English. We found the food and wine to be faultless. Three courses with wine around £65. Excellent value in an area that's a bit of the beaten track but close enough to visit the excellent Bercy village.

Forget forking out over hundreds of euros at the Eiffel Tower's pricey restaurants, pop around the corner (southwards) to a fantastic little authentic French bistro called Chez Ribe.

Great food, nice wine, great atmosphere, frequented by locals and all at a reasonable price. Great place for an evening meal in a great location.

A nice Left Bank bistro, Le Nemrod is in the Rue du Cherche Midi, just around the corner from the Bon Marche.

Good value for lunch or just a coffee or a pichet of wine - good for Beaujolais. A great place for classic Auvergnate cuisine.

If you are in south Paris (where a few budget hotels are), but fancy some decent food at a reasonable price then check out this family-run bistro.

Recently renovated, this is a place that is packed with locals, and it is clear why - the food is excellent and the atmosphere lively and friendly. Marie, one of the sisters in the Bistro's name speaks excellent English and would be more than happy to share her passion for the capital city with you.

Good food, good wine, very reasonable prices, good location if you are south of the river.

A little bistro in the 7th district. They have reasonably priced gorgeous meals, attractive and attentive staff who are patient with my poor French skills, nice wines, and a full bar.

I go there every time I'm in Paris, and the service and food are always fabulous. The decor is mostly burgundy and the atmosphere is cozy but young and contemporary.

Just outside of the Ecole Militaire Metro stop. I mean *JUST,* as you emerge from the station.

Yes, it's a little bit touristy (in other words, the menu has some English on it, which is pretty much unheard of in good Parisian bistros), but it really is a fine little place, with some very typically French fare on offer. Last time I went I had a great chicken stew, and some lovely wine.

And at lunchtime it's full of local office workers, which is a good sign that the food is value for money. Be prepared to rub shoulders with your neighbours though, as it's a tight squeeze. I haven't been in the evening, but I hear it can get busy.
