France
The Terrass Hotel in Montmatre is a fantastic hotel - service, food and staff are all superb in this beautiful region of this most romantic city.
Take the lift up to the 7th floor and onto the roof terrace in the evening and watch the Tour Eiffel light up in the evening surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Parisian skyline.
On a relaxed & warm summers evening, there's nothing better!
Check out a fabulous, chic boutique hotel on the leftbank, called Hotel Quartier Latin.
Slap bang on Rue des Ecoles, and within walking distance of Notre Dame and the wonderful restaurants of the Latin Quarter, it has old-school elegance behind a townhouse facade.
The leafy Place Dauphine concentrates the peace of Paris’s quieter corners half-way across the Pont Neuf on the Île de la Cité.
Turn left for Rive Gauche chic, right for Rive Droite grandeur. It contains the Hôtel Henri IV, squeezed, tall and thin, into a row of cafés and galleries.
Irregular, sometimes retro, but always clean rooms (some sharing showers, others en suite) stretch up a creaky spiral staircase from the friendly breakfast room.
Four can sleep in characterful simplicity for less than €60.
Perfectly placed for a dawn stroll to Notre Dame then breakfast on the Île St Louis.
Le Lys is a unique B&B in a 17th century house in the atmospheric Marais district, a stone’s throw from Notre Dame and the Centre Pompidou.
Stéphane and Jean’s elegant home is stuffed with antiques and paintings, and the generous breakfast is a delight, but it is the warmth of their welcome that impresses the most.
By the time you leave, you will be firm friends, and your experience of Paris will be all the richer for it.
Le Lys is on Rue Quincampoix, w, and the telephone number is +33 (0)6 7741 2913/(0)1 4704 2880
Try Formula One hotels - they are cheap and clean, and you will save a lot of money.
Book a night at Christian Lacroix's higgledy piggledy boutique hotel Petit Moulin. Bursting with character, you'll never leave!
If you want to enjoy the life and history of the Latin Quarter, but want to stay somewhere quiet and comfortable, the Hotel Parc Saint Severin (22 rue de la Parcheminerie in the 5th arrondissment: tel. + 33 (0) 1 77 15 95 08 ) is perfect.
It's also only five minutes walk from Notre Dame. Good buffet breakfast (12 Euros) and friendly staff.
Rates 150 to 165 Euros for a standard twin/double room, reasonable for ther centre of Paris.
If you are planning a trip to Paris, travel in December. Find yourself on top of the Eiffel Tower, which you will have almost completely to yourself at that time of the year, covered in icicles against a breathtaking backdrop of one of the most stunning cities in the world.
Don't miss the cosy creperies, which offer a warm retreat in the crisp hilly area of Montmarte. And as an added bonus you will not struggle to find a hotel room.
Hotel Chopin in the grands boulevards district is a real find. Truly French , but great location at a reasonable price.
If you are planning a trip on a budget but want to stay in a nice hotel in a nice part of Paris, it is a good idea to book "room only".
This means you have to go out and have breakfast, and as my husband and I found recently, this added to the experience of the trip. We stayed at a really nice hotel just off the Champs Elycees and went out to get breakfast on the Champs Elycees and sit outside and watch the world go by.
It was relaxed and the coffee was great. For those on a really tight budget, MacDonalds serves a vareity of breakfasts and again, the hot drinks are better than you get in the UK.
We found this way we got to experience a bit of the smart hotel scene but it got us out and there was a lot of choice available over breakfasts!
If your on a budget in Paris stay at the Hotel Innova, 5mins walk from the Effiel Tower and only £27 a night.
Stay at the Hotel Mayet, a design hotel that is reasonably priced. The rooms are small but beautifully designed and romantic. There are large graffiti murals in the lobby, very fun.
Stay at the Villa Royal Hotel, Pigalle!
We had a great stay there, at great value. It's an uber-rococo place, that balances chintz with gaudy.
The first (but not the last; we'll be going back) time I've watched a massive flatscreen TV housed in a gold frame, from the comfort of a jacuzzi bath.
And all for £75 per room per night.
The cafe downstairs is great and with Moulin Rouge and Montmartre within 5 minutes walk you can sin and be forgiven in the time it takes to return your free Velib bike!
Forget about spending your time and money in over-touristy, over-priced areas of Paris like the Latin Quarter. Book your hotel and plan your meals within the 10th Arrondissement, as near to Canal St-Martin as possible. This is the real Paris. Head to the Hotel du Nord for a fantastic meal or just a glass of wine on the bank of the canal.
If you want a quiet, characterful but cheap hotel in an atmospheric part of central Paris the Hotel des Batignolles in Rue des Batignolles is hard to beat.
This is a rising chic area west of Montmartre where the poet Verlaine grew up and Mallarmé lived and has lots of lovely neighbourhood foodshops, bars and restaurants.
The hotel is old-fashioned, unhip, but quiet and a double room with breakfast costs only 62 Euros a night. It’s near the Place de Clichy and Rome metro stations and it’s easy to book.

Check into the Esmeralda Hotel. For charm, eccentricity and value, you still cannot beat this jewel across from Notre Dame.
I have just come back for my unforgettable and romantic stay in Paris. But let me explain from the beginning: I didn't know where to look for a romantic hotel or bed and breakfast in Saint Germain. After surfing on the net I discovered this parisby.com, which has lots of beautiful properties (and pictures of them).
Finally, I found Hotel d'Aubusson, a cozy hotel in the right location. I asked the travel assistant of the website, Elena, to help me with some things (flowers and wine in the room) for our anniversary, and she suggested I write to the owner of the property, and everything went perfect.
